Getting your calculator ready for exams

What the IB requires before each paper: clearing the TI-84's memory and applications, or entering the exam mode on the Nspire and Casio.

Do not use the TI-84's built-in exam mode. Its Press-to-Test mode disables applications that you are allowed to use, and will probably need, in IB exams, including the polynomial solver PlySmlt2. For this calculator the IB instead requires you to clear the memory and remove non-permitted applications, as follows.

Reset the RAM. Press to open MEMORY, then for 7: Reset. On the RAM tab, press for 1: All RAM and to confirm. This clears all lists, stored values, the calculation history, and the Y= editor.

Reset the archived variables. Open the same menu again with , move to the ARCHIVE tab with , and press for 1: Vars, then to confirm. Be careful here: do not choose 2: Apps or 3: Both, or you will erase applications that you need for your exams, and reinstalling them requires a computer running TI Connect CE or another TI-84 to copy them from.

Delete every application that is not on this list. Press then for 2: Mem Management/Delete, choose Apps, and delete each application with . The only applications you may keep are:

  • PlySmlt2 (polynomial roots and simultaneous equations)
  • Inequalz (inequality graphing)
  • Transfrm (transformation graphing)
  • CtlgHelp (catalogue help)
  • CBL/CBR, EasyData and other USB data-probe apps
  • language localisers such as Español

Finance is part of the operating system and cannot be deleted.

Finally, go back to your settings and turn STAT DIAGNOSTICS on again, because resetting the RAM turns it off.
