One-sample t-test

AI HL

Use the calculator's test menu to run a one-sample t-test from summary statistics and read t and the p-value.

Goal

Test H0:μ=50 against Ha:μ>50 using xˉ=51.2,  Sx=4.1,  n=16.

1

From the MAIN MENU, open Statistics. If you're already inside another app, press first to get back to MAIN MENU.

2

Press (TEST), then (t), then (1-SAMPLE) to open the one-sample t-test wizard.

3

Press (Var) to switch Data from List to Variable, since you have summary statistics rather than raw data. If you had the raw data instead, leave Data on List (soft key F1, List) and point the wizard at the list holding it (e.g. List 1); the Casio finds xˉ and sx from it.

4

Fill in the form, pressing after each value: set the alternative μ to >μ0, then μ0 = 50, xˉ=51.2, sx = 4.1, n = 16.

Result

t1.17 and p0.130, so at the 5% level there is insufficient evidence to reject H0.

Your turn

Work each one on your calculator, then check the answer.

  1. 1

    Test H0:μ=100 against Ha:μ>100 using xˉ=104.2,  sx=9.5,  n=20, at the 5% level.

  2. 2

    Test H0:μ=15 against Ha:μ>15 using xˉ=15.9,  sx=2.3,  n=12, at the 5% level.
