A tour of the main screens

Where everything happens: the home screen, the graphing screens, the statistics lists, and the menus that hold the rest.

Everything starts at the MAIN MENU. The Casio is a collection of apps, and opens the grid of them from anywhere. Each icon carries a number or letter in its corner: press that key and you are inside, no needed for the letters. Six apps cover this whole book: Run-Matrix () for calculation, Statistics () for data, Graph (), Table (), Equation ( types its A) and Financial ( types its C).

The six keys that drive everything. to mean whatever the tabs along the bottom of the screen say they mean, and the tabs change from screen to screen — so read them every time. A on the tab means another page of options. closes one level and is your back button; is the Casio's execute key — there is no = key. The yellow print above a key is what makes it do, and the red print is its letter.

Run-Matrix (icon ) is the everyday calculation screen. Type and press : entries keep their textbook shape, answers appear on the right, and old lines stay above for reuse. In Math mode the Casio answers exactly where it can — 47÷8 comes back as the fraction 847 — and one press of turns an exact answer into its decimal and back.

Graph (icon ) opens on the function list: type y=x23 into Y1:, press to register it, then (DRAW). The three yellow shortcuts printed above the function keys work on any drawn graph: (V-Window) frames the view, (Zoom) gets you closer, and (G-Solve) finds roots, maxima and intersections for you.

Statistics (icon ) opens the list editor: columns List 1 to List 26 where data goes. The soft keys take it from there — (CALC) for one-variable statistics and the regressions, (TEST) for hypothesis tests. Lists are shared calculator-wide: the same List 1 is waiting in Run-Matrix under , and everything in the lists survives switching apps and powering off.

Equation and Financial round out the set. Equation (icon A) solves simultaneous systems (SIMUL), polynomials of degree 2 to 6 (POLY), and single equations (SOLVER). Financial (icon C) holds Compound Interest for every investment and loan question. Both are ordinary apps: the same soft keys, the same to back out.

Result

Apps, addressed by number or letter from ; six soft keys whose meaning is written on the screen; to execute and to back out.

One habit from day one: apps reopen exactly where you left them, so start a fresh problem by pressing and re-entering — and expect your last session's leftovers until you clear them.
